Prima Materia

Project details

Programme
Group CVA Group 2
Year 1

Prima Materia is an allegorical science fiction film that critiques the fixation of space agencies and corporations on colonising Mars while neglecting Earth’s environmental collapse. Shrouded in artificial fog released by drones, the planet is cast into darkness, abandoned under the assumption it can no longer sustain life. The film explores this tension through the lens of Hermetic philosophy, questioning not only how we survive, but how we choose to adapt, and rebuild.

Beneath the rippled terrain lies a hidden civilisation: the Light Bearers. Guardians of Earth, the Light Bearers embody knowledge and endurance, sustaining a secret community through adaptation and memory. At the centre of their world is liquid light, a luminous substance born from Earth’s transformation, serving as energy, memory, and spiritual essence, supporting architecture and daily life. Their city is carved into the altered landscape, designed to harvest and balance this resource.

Through this allegory, the film fuses Greek and Egyptian mythology with speculative design, envisioning restoration through forgotten wisdom and positioning design as a cinematic and philosophical act of resistance.

Fog Catchers

Fog Catchers

The fog catchers are designed to draw water from the air, condensing mist into droplets. These drops travel through tubes across the city, supplying the houses and sustaining life within the desert landscape.

Fog Emitter

Fog Emitter

Drones rise from the desert, releasing artificial fog that blankets Earth in darkness. Conceived as instruments of control, they symbolise expansionist futures that abandon renewal on Earth in favour of colonising distant worlds.

This section presents the design process of key architectural elements in the city: the fog catcher, the gate, the liquid light harvesting system, and the drone — each shaping the balance between survival and symbolism.
