The Eastbound Trail

Project details

Programme
Year 2

This project transforms a disused post-industrial railway corridor into an elevated greenway from Shoreditch to Bethnal Green, with future extensions towards Mile End. Reimagining the city through retrofit and symbiosis, it reclaims under-utilised edges as vibrant social ecologies: industrial remnants and arches are adapted as public hubs, while native and adaptive plantings form living corridors that stitch fragmented habitats together. In doing so, the project aligns with the Half-Earth ambition, expanding biodiversity as cultural and ecological currency.

Beginning in Shoreditch, a nexus of creativity, the design reopens neglected spaces, returning public space and sky to residents. At the other end of the corridor, Bethnal Green is a historically diverse community with strong craft traditions, arches, and side spaces hosting workshops, performances, and street art. Through assisted and spontaneous processes, the landscape evolves into resilient ecosystems of meadows, pollinator corridors, and trails. Elevated paths and vibrant under-bridge spaces link neighbourhoods, creating inclusive environments where nature, art, and community flourish in the Symbiocene.

The project reimagines disused railway spaces as a continuous elevated greenway. Featuring Cinema Square, walkways, the Performance Circle, and adaptive arches, it connects communities, enhances accessibility, and preserves industrial heritage.

Reimagined warehouses form a plaza and roof park with gardens, play, and markets. Green roofs, reopened arches, and adaptive reuse create a layered gateway at Shoreditch, blending industrial heritage with new urban life and community gathering.

A former wasteland becomes a cultural park with rain gardens, pathways, and flexible seating. By day it offers calm retreat, and by night it transforms into an open-air cinema and stage, framed by the graffiti walls of East London.

The design projects bridges and arches into future community hubs. The elevated walkway offers diverse routes, supports gatherings and children’s play, while green courtyards with shops, cafés, and studios foster local life, events, and connections.

Activating Urban Spaces

Facing the arches plaza, the Performance Circle serves as a lawn by day and amphitheatre for events, supporting Hackney’s cultural life. Shops and studios activate the arches, while soft night lighting creates a welcoming, vibrant atmosphere.
